- Start your process early. Leaving this to last minute just increases stress and anxiety over fast approaching deadlines, and increases the likelihood of making mistakes, missing steps, or submitting less than your best work.
- Be open minded. Maybe you grew up just knowing you always wanted a big school. As you are searching, consider lots of options. Maybe you would actually love a small or medium sized school. You won’t know unless you look.
- Don’t compare yourself to others. This is your process. Just yours. What is right for your friend isn’t always right for you. This is your journey.
- Try not to predict the future. Trying to figure out the data and the system for how colleges choose their students will make you even more stressed. There’s no way to know, because it changes every year!
- Take time to relax. Between all the stress and pressure you are undoubtedly under in all aspects of your life, your college applications is another thing you are adding to your plate. Take time every day to relax, and do something you enjoy. Even if it’s just for ten minutes!
- Submit your application well before the deadlines. Once you submit, the schools will notify you if something is missing. If you submit early, you will have plenty of time to rectify the situation. You also don’t want to take the chance of a technology glitch, causing you to miss a deadline.
- Apply to that dream school! You don’t want to have any regrets. If you start hearing that friends got into schools where you really wanted to go, and they got scholarships, you’re going to wish you had applied too. You don’t want any regrets at the end of this process. Pick a variety of schools, but don’t leave off that dream school.
- Prepare! You know you will be taking the SAT or ACT, if not both. Practice. Have a plan. Your stress level will go down if you feel prepared to take the test.
- Don’t do this alone. Find someone you trust to help you. It can get overwhelming. Find someone you can talk to, show your essays to for feedback, give you advice on good places to apply.
- Have fun! Remember, this is supposed to be an exciting time for you. Focus on the new adventure headed your way. Envision all the exciting things that come with college. Enjoy the process.
